SXSW 2027 Rethinks Its Schedule: Saturday-to-Sunday Format Aims for Wider Appeal
SXSW has announced its 2027 edition will run March 13–21, stretching from a Saturday start to a Sunday close — a deliberate shift in format that signals a new strategic direction for the festival.

The 2027 schedule marks a meaningful departure from recent years. SXSW EDU kicks off first (March 13–16), followed by the main SXSW Conferences & Festivals (March 15–21), with tracks spanning innovation, music, film & TV, and comedy. Crucially, there is a second "crossover day" on Tuesday, and the Innovation track now runs for six consecutive days beginning March 15.
The Saturday-to-Sunday window is not accidental. Organizers are explicitly targeting students on spring break and general festival visitors — not just industry insiders. Greg Rosenbaum, SXSW's senior vice president of programming, said: "In 2027, we're bringing our global community together across education, film, music, technology, comedy and culture for another week of discovery and collaboration."
Context: Decentralization in Progress
The schedule shift comes as SXSW navigates its most significant structural transition in years. The Austin Convention Center is undergoing a multiyear redevelopment, which forced the festival to adopt a decentralized "clubhouse" model in 2026, dispersing programming across hotels and alternative venues. The 2027 format appears to formalize this approach rather than return to the pre-2026 centralized model.
The festival also dropped its second weekend after 2025 and condensed its footprint to seven days in 2026. Questions about long-term attendance, sponsorship stability, and direction have persisted through this transition.
Leadership in Flux
Beyond the physical schedule, SXSW is searching for a new permanent CEO after longtime president Hugh Forrest departed in 2025. Jenny Connelly, a Penske Media Corporation executive, has overseen operations in the interim, with the CEO role confirmed to be based in Austin.
