# At SXSW, Everything Old Is New Again

For decades, when visitors arrived in Austin for South by Southwest, the first thing they did was head to the Austin Convention Center to pick up their badge. This year, they'll be confronted with a massive hole in the ground. That's just the first shift in what SXSW Senior Vice President of Content Meghan Cassin calls a experience that will "feel like your first time going to South By."

## The Convention Center Void

The Austin Convention Center — the festival's anchor for over three decades — has been demolished, with its replacement not opening until 2029 at the earliest. The change forced SXSW to revisit its fundamental approach. A task force combining "South By O.G.s" with at least 15 years of experience and newcomers like Cassin took the festival back to its basic intentions.

> "There are always the epic stories," Cassin said. "There's always the story of 'I was at that South By,' and it always proceeds to be the craziest thing you ever heard."

Chief Commercial Officer Peter Lewis, who helped reimagine the festival during its 2020 COVID pivot, noted that experience "positioned us, from a mindset standpoint, to be focused on how we can improve the event."

## Concurrent Programming Replaces Sequential Tracks

One of the biggest changes: Moving from 10 days to seven by having all sections run concurrently. All three elements — Film and TV, Music, and Innovation — now overlap on a single calendar. Lewis called the shift the result of conversations about "creating an event that is more manageable, and the reality is that nobody has 10 days to spend in Austin except Austinites."

Music actually adds a day under the new format, while Innovation grows from four days to a full week. Film & TV loses two days and won't have a closing night film, as the Paramount Theatre will be needed for film awards.

## Clubhouse Model: A New Footprint

Without a central hub, SXSW designed a new geographic footprint concentrated in the 60-block rectangle between I-35 and Congress Avenue, and 10th Street and Cesar Chavez. The festival provides new hangout hubs nicknamed "clubhouses":

- **Innovation clubhouse:** Brazos Hall, near session hotels
- **Music clubhouse:** Downright Austin hotel, top of Red River
- **Film & TV clubhouse:** 800 Congress, adjacent to a three-block street closure

This approach was inspired in part by SXSW London, which never had a central hub and instead creates spaces across the Shoreditch neighborhood.

## The Paramount's Absence in 2027

One planning challenge for 2027: The Paramount Theatre — the biggest screen and biggest theatre of the film festival — will close in June 2026 for a 10-month restoration and renovation. The remodel will include new bars, upgraded sound and light, and new seating. The bad news: **the Paramount will be closed during SXSW 2027**. The neighboring State Theatre will then close for 14 months starting July 2027.

## The I-35 Wildcard

A major uncertainty looms over SXSW's future: the complete rebuilding of Downtown stretches of I-35. The Texas Department of Transportation has estimated seven years of traffic disruption. Combined with the convention center not returning until 2029 or 2030, SXSW faces an extended period of infrastructure upheaval.

## International Attendance in Decline

The number and diversity of firms and nations represented at the festival's expo has noticeably shrunk. International travelers are avoiding the U.S. amid concerns about deportations, increased travel restrictions, and artist visas being denied or delayed. SXSW staff can only offer support and advice on navigating an increasingly challenging visa process.

- "Clubhouse" venue clusters replace centralized badge pickup and expo
- Paramount Theatre closed for renovations during SXSW 2027
- International attendance declining due to visa issues and travel restrictions
