A grieving Chinese and Vietnamese American family move to an isolated house in a new town. Eight-year-old Gracie, silent since the death of her beloved father, begins to interact with a dark presence in the woods behind their new home. Her mother, Emily, struggles to hide her suffocating grief, cutting her off from Gracie and her mother-in-law, Nai Nai. When Gracie is taken by the dark presence, her family has to confront the ghosts of the past and their shared trauma to find her. The story intertwines historical events from the 1885 massacre of Chinese coal miners with present-day supernatural elements, culminating in a poignant exploration of loss, memory, and reconciliation with the past.
